How is it detected by cattle?

SecureCattle®’s components are highly volatile, allowing the animal to detect the pheromone via its vomeronasal organ (VNO), which then transmits the message to the brain.
The vomeronasal organ, also known as the Jacobson’s organ, is found in all mammals: a tube-shaped organ located in the nasal cavities, just above the bony palate, connecting the oral cavity to the nasal cavity. When the pheromone message reaches the vomeronasal organ, it stimulates neurons there.
The message is directly transmitted to brain regions that control emotions and the various physiological mechanisms they influence. The effect of the pheromone is short-lived, but it causes physiological changes that allow the animal to gradually utilize all its adaptive abilities without experiencing stress. Because the vomeronasal organ is not constantly open, overstimulation is prevented, and the detected message is destroyed.

These two features prevent addiction as well as the presence of residues. The compounds are trapped in the vomeronasal organ and broken down there, leaving only carbon dioxide and water behind. The VNO contains specialized neurons carrying specific receptors.
